Historic London Town and Gardens, not far from Annapolis, Maryland, is a unique place. Half of the site is the location of a vanished colonial settlement, and the other half is an extensive botanical garden. Therefore, when I was asked to create a new site map for visitors, it was a double challenge. For the colonial settlement, I had to study and accurately depict historic and reconstructed structures. For the botanical garden, I had to identify and illustrate important landscape features and plants. Above all, though, I had to investigate London Town from the perspective of a visitor. I identified and mapped paths, located distinctive landmarks, worked with staff to select appropriate routes, and combined all the information into a single illustration that I hope will guide visitors for years to come.
